Spring Cherry Blossoms

To celebrate the beginning of spring last week we made these spring cherry blossoms using a water bottle!  We dipped the bottom of one of my seltzer water bottles into pink paint and used it as a stamp to create the cherry blossom flowers.  We hung our spring trees in our entryway.

W is for Watermelon.

 W is for watermelon.

I am still having issues with downloading my photos from yesterday so here is a letter activity that Jack did last week.  One of Jack's favorite musical artists is named Billy Jonas.  Billy Jonas performed at Middlebury's Festival on the Green many years ago and this is how we were first introduced to his music.  The only music that Jack requests right now is Billy Jonas (and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker music).  One of Jack's favorite Billy Jonas songs is called Watermelon.  Jack was SO excited to make a watermelon for the letter W.  He glued black beans on for the watermelon seeds. Jack also asked to have a big bite cut out of his watermelon slice!

Hello, Spring!

Daddy, Jack & Eve

Grace

Eve

Jack

I was hoping to share our first day of spring activity in a post tonight but I am having some issues downloading pictures onto our computer.  I'll leave you with some pictures from our time at Pine Point Beach on Sunday until I fix the computer issue.

With temperatures approaching 80 degrees later this week I am hoping to take Grace, Jack and Eve back to the beach several more times this week to celebrate our beautiful first week of spring.

The Children's Museum of Maine is ranked one of the nation's best!

Hip, hip hooray for the Children's Museum of Maine!  Our museum was rated one of the nation's top 12 children's museums' on Forbes.com.  You can click here to read about the museum that we love so much too!  We visit the Children's Museum of Maine every Wednesday and we have been going there every week since Grace was eight months old!

RightStart Mathematics

"Mommy, can we do math now?'  I hear this several times a day from my math loving girl!  Grace has always loved numbers.  Since the age of one, Grace has had a strong mathematical knowledge base.  I really wanted to foster Grace's love of learning and her love of math so I investigated many, many math programs that I could use to continue to teach Grace at home.  After lots of research I decide on a program called RightStart Mathematics.  My main objective was for Grace to fully understand math and numbers since 95% of math should be understood and only 5% learned by rote.  This program emphasizes patterns and reasoning over memorization and algorithms.  I also wanted to be fully involved in the program and RightStart Mathematics is heavily parent driven.  Grace and I cherish this time we spend together every day.  Since starting this program several months ago, Grace has learned to count in a whole new way.  We typically count 10, 11, 12, 13 and so on, which really does not give a child an idea about tens and ones.  Grace has learned to count by saying ten-1, ten-2, ten-3 for the teens and 2-ten and 1, 2-ten and 2, 2-ten and 3, etc. for the twenties and so on.  In the pictures above, Grace is using tally sticks to show the answer to an addition equation (9 + 4).  Grace has learned to add numbers together easily by grouping -- e.g., talking a 1 from the 4 and putting it with the 9 to make 10 and 3 or 13!  I love how Grace is learning to add numbers together by fully understanding how it is done rather than relying on counting strategies or simply by memorizing the answers.

Grace has also loved learning how to use this special abacus, which is based on fives and tens.  By grouping fives it has taught Grace to think of ten as a unit.  She has also learned how to add two digit numbers together using her abacus.  It is a great learning tool.

Grace loves using her geoboard.  Grace has also enjoyed learning about parallel and perpendicular lines and planes, geometric solids, and the Tens Fractal!  I continue to be amazed with Grace's knowledge but I am most proud of her deep love of learning.

Sticky Collage

I love having my children create their own collages because it is such a great exercise in creativity, fine motor and language skills.  Eve created her first sticky collage last week.  To set up the collage, I taped a piece of contact paper onto our sliding glass door with the sticky side facing out.  I gathered many objects (pieces of paper, straw pieces, foam shapes, cotton balls, yarn, poms, tissue) and placed them in a bin on the floor underneath the contact paper.  Eve LOVED touching the contact paper with her hands - she giggled every time her hands stuck to the paper.  After experimenting with the texture of the contact paper, Eve got right to work on her collage.  Throughout the week, Eve would visit her collage to add and remove items and move them around.

When our cat, Petey, came over to see what was going on Eve told him all about her collage and she even offered Petey several items to place on the collage!  Petey preferred to just watch the creative process!!

Eve was having so much fun with her sticky collage throughout the week that Grace and Jack joined in on the fun too.  They added several of their own creations!  This was such a fun week long activity.

Learning About Constellations

Jack has been very interested in learning about outer space for some time now.  Every night Jack stands at his window gazing up at the sky.  Jack was fascinated to learn that stars are actually still present during the day but we cannot see them because of the sun's bright light.  Jack and I talked about how the stars make patterns when they are connected together with imaginary lines.  To visualize these constellations, Jack made made a constellation box (a box with a hole in one end to look through and the other end open to place constellations cards).  We made several constellation cards by punching out tiny holes and connecting them with lines in order to clearly see the pictures the stars make. Jack used his constellation box to view the constellations.

Once Jack identified the constellations by viewing them in his constellation box, he located them on a start chart and we highlighted them.

Jack taped the constellation cards onto one of the windows in our home.  We will be looking up at the night sky to try to spot these constellations.  What fun!

A very good reason for the lack of posts...

...spring has sprung - at least for a few days this week! We have been enjoying every moment of some spring-like temperatures around here and we have celebrated this by spending our days outside from beginning to end.  Some of our favorite moments from this week included going to the beach (a favorite of ours all year long!), sledding without having to wear all of our snow gear (just snow pants, boots and mittens) and going on long walks to spot signs of spring (we saw our first robin today).  This weather has left us all longing for spring to come and stay.  As a result of some spring fever, I have fallen very behind with my blogging.  I will get back to posting regularly soon - I promise!

Bravo, Bravo!

I'll be posting a few more pictures from Jack's first theater performance tomorrow.  This picture of our oh so handsome Jack-a-roo was taken immediately following his play.  I can't describe how EXCITED Jack was to receive flowers after his performance.  He was simply glowing!  When we arrived home, Jack arranged his flowers in a vase.  Jack carefully placed his flowers on a table at the end of his bed so that he can see them just before he falls asleep...a sweet reminder of his wonderful performance!

Participating in Read Across America Day with Our Favorite Books

Today we participated in Read Across America Day, along with millions of other children across our country!  We also celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday (pictures to come soon).  The pictures below show Grace, Jack and Eve reading their favorite books on this very special day.

Grace is currently reading the Little House in the Big Woods from the Little House on the Prairie book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  Each night I see Grace's light shining under her door long after I tucked her in because she is always up late reading!  Grace is such an amazing reader.

Jack's favorite book right now is The Nutcracker by Joel Meyerowitz.  Jack watched the Maine State Ballet's production of The Nutcracker in November and it was truly a life changing event for him.  Every since seeing that performance Jack has been dancing nonstop!  Not a day goes by in our home that Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite is not playing!

Jack carries this Nutcracker book with him from room to room in our house so it is always available for him to read!

Eve loves books with babies!  I often find Eve on the floor carrying on long conversations with the babies in her book!  It is so sweet.

Eve's very favorite book right now is Caterpillar to Butterfly by Sally Symes.  Eve loves the interactive nature of this book and the color theme.  Eve's favorite spot to read her books is in this green chair.  Eve carries as many books as she can hold to this chair to sit and read!

I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves.

Higgins Beach

We enjoyed a beautiful afternoon at Higgins Beach last week when Maddy was with us.  With temperatures in the lower 50s, Higgins Beach was calling us to come for a visit!

February 29

Grace, Jack and Eve were very interested to learn all about Leap Day yesterday.  Grace made Happy Leap Year Day cards for everyone in our family and there were many, many greetings of "Happy Leap Year Day" to just about everyone we saw!  We spent our extra day at the Children's Museum celebrating Jack's first play performance.  Jack played the part of Peter -- the main character in The Snowy Day book by Ezra Jack Keats.  I'll post pictures of his special day soon!

Got Gracie, Jack & Eve?
