Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. by Celebrating Diversity

I feel that it is so important to teach children to value and celebrate diversity.  Every year we honor Martin Luther King Jr. on or near his birthday.  This year we decided to make a paper link chain using different shades of white, brown and black to represent all of the beautiful colors of skin in our world all linked together as one.  On each individual link we wrote a word, phrase or quote which celebrates who Martin Luther King Jr. was or something that he represented.  Some words that Grace, Jack and Eve chose were love, peace, kindness, respect, sharing, same, harmony, wish, friendship, together, equal, Rosa Parks and I Have A Dream.  After writing on each link we put the links together to make our paper chain.  Here are some pictures...

 Our finished paper chain!

Here is our finished paper chain.  We decided to hang it in the entrance to our art room.  It will remind us all of every day of how very beautiful everyone is in our world.

Grace, Jack, and Eve, your chain is fabulous. What a lot of cutting, thinking, and writing, and you did it as a team! You hung it in the perfect spot, where you can see it from different directions. You are quite the crafters!

These little workers created something beautiful to the eye and to the spirit. What the world needs now are more Eves, Jacks, and Graces who recognize and can name what is important for life, for fellowship, for the survival and growth of all that is good.
Long may these ideals live.

Love, peace, hugs and kisses,
Memere

If everyone everywhere took just a few moments in their day to remind themselves how ALL people should be celebrated imagine what a world this would be.

My wish is for the generation of Grace, Jack, and Eve to be even more open to all beliefs, ideas, and diversity in all of it's forms. I am so happy to see my Grandchildren learning and loving this creed.

I love 'everything' about this post, Rebecca. Just seeing and reading your words will make me a better person. Love the paper chain so much.

Thank you for sharing this moment with us.
Love all of you for exactly who you are,
Mom

ps...so loving that last photo with Jack looking back at you with the binoculars!!
